HMS Victory Model - Home Page |
|
Welcome to the website that celebrates this remarkable scratch-built model of the HMS Victory. The original ship required almost six years to build; the 1:48 scale model took 15,440 hours over a period of 20 years to complete. Rex Lethlean, a farmer from outside of Melbourne, Australia, laid the keel of the HMS Victory model in 1980. He meticulously made evey part of the model by hand. The process involved creating drawings to scale (see Drawings), designing and building the tools he would use (see Construction), building mock-ups of the piece in question, and then building the final piece. The attention to detail is remarkable. The links to Hull and Rigging include comments by Rex. Other images of the Deck, Boats and Figurehead attest to his incredible achievement. The Statistics page provides fascinating detail about the construction of the original HMS Victory and, in contrast, about the Victory model. The Links page conects you to site of interest to historians and model shipbuilders. If you are a model shipbuilder and would like additional information about the design and construction of the Victory Model, see the Information page.
